Environment

We turn raw materials into products that are much more valuable. Resource efficiency is a win-win for our customers and ourselves. We will grow our expertise in resource efficiency to develop better and more sustainable products for our customers and improve our competitiveness. Our aim is to show that we have used the fewest resources in the most efficient way to produce the best possible products. We want this to be recognised by our customers as a core part of our competitive advantage. By 2017, we want to do this with zero waste and using 50% fewer key resources.

Sustainability in Action – Making Energy Savings

Combined heat and power or CHP is arousing interest for its ability to capture waste heat. CHP plants operate at a local level, rather than taking energy from the grid, and deliver efficient point-of-use generation of electricity.

To contribute to energy savings, Johnson Matthey has CHP plants operating at two major UK sites and one site in the US. The plants provide efficient electricity generation in addition to steam and hot water which can be used to provide heat for other duties on site. They also deliver significant reductions in emissions when compared to centrally generated power.

Johnson Matthey has recently constructed a new emission control catalyst manufacturing plant in Royston, UK. This new facility has been connected to the on-site CHP plant, saving 4,000 GJ per year on office heating. A further emission control catalyst plant at Royston will be connected in 2008 which will result in an additional heating saving of 2,700 GJ per year.
