Health and Safety

As a business we provide products and services that enhance general health and wellbeing. Our people are a key part of our sustainability efforts. We want work to be a positive experience for them so that we can achieve our sustainability vision. Their health and wellbeing underpin our aspirations to become a more sustainable business. Our aim is to achieve zero accidents, with our people going home in at least as good a shape as when they arrived at work. We want our local communities to have the same trust as our employees in the care we take for their health, safety and wellbeing.

Sustainability in Action – Sustained Safety Improvement

Macfarlan Smith, a Johnson Matthey business which manufactures active pharmaceutical ingredients and intermediate products for the pharmaceutical industry, is on the front foot as it embarks on improving all aspects of its environment, health and safety performance. Through its significant commitment, Macfarlan Smith has achieved major improvements in reducing exposure of employees to hazardous substances in the workplace, behavioural based safety, environmental emissions control and incident management.

In recognition of sustained improvement in its lost time accident rate of at least 25% per year over the preceding three-year period, Macfarlan Smith was presented with an Improvement Award by the Chemical Industries Association in December 2007. This is an outstanding achievement and the result of committed efforts by all employees over a prolonged period of time.
