Johnson Matthey has been working with the Carbon Trust and AEA Consulting to understand the carbon footprint of its Royston site in the UK.

Identifying the carbon footprint of our businesses is a crucial step forward in sustainability. At our Royston manufacturing site in the UK, Johnson Matthey has been working with the Carbon Trust and AEA Consulting to find out what exactly is causing our carbon footprint.

Our footprint turned out to be heavily influenced by energy use. Lighting, electric motors, compressed air systems, cooling systems and high temperature equipment were among the culprits, and the project has led to several reports in these areas.

The project concluded that savings in carbon emissions of 5% per year can be achieved, worth over £3.2 million by 2020. Actions to realise these savings are now being reviewed to define projects to secure these goals, and training to underpin the work will be defined in 2008. But the benefits don’t stop there: the carbon assessment work at Royston has provided a useful model from which a more formalised corporate emissions reduction programme can be developed and launched.
