Johnson Matthey’s Clitheroe site in the UK opened its doors to local schools and invited local residents and guests on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th June 2007 respectively. The aim of the open day was to invite people to come and learn about Johnson Matthey, see what we do on site and find out how the site is working on strengthening its links with the local community and surrounding areas. The purpose of the schools’ visits on the Friday was to build relationships between education and industry and this is proving to be a success with projects already underway.

On the Friday 420 school children visited the site, with around 400 local residents and invited guests coming on the Saturday. Visitors were given a brief overview of the company and a site tour. A marquee was set up and guests were able to view some of the different aspects of life on the Clitheroe site, including environmental work, health and safety aspects, creative thinking and recruitment, laboratory demonstrations and customer information.

Visitors all along the age spectrum were welcomed, including a large contingent of retired employees. Community links were strengthened by the attendance of the Mayor who joined in the tour, looking back on the history of the site and forward to the developments of the future.
