The green travel plan aims to reduce the environmental burden of the journey to and from work.
Our Billingham site in the UK has developed a travel plan to set up a car sharing scheme and to encourage employees to cycle to work. The site used the local authority’s travel planning website and drew up the travel plan in partnership with the council.
A baseline survey was carried out, with a surprisingly high rate of response. Out of the plan came several actions to improve the way that Johnson Matthey's employees travel to work at the site. Under the new employee ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme, staff can do a lease purchase of bicycles with a discount of up to 40% on list prices. New bicycle racks and motorcycle racks have been installed and to date the scheme has had a 15% take up by staff.
A car park strategy has been developed and priority green parking spaces are to be allocated in the car park for staff who car share for a minimum of two days a week on average. The use of a car sharing website to promote car sharing both within the business and within other local companies is being explored. The travel plan also promotes telephone / video conferencing in place of travel where it is suitable.
Short term, the plan has been a quiet success. The aim in the longer term is to help bring about better public transport links, improve site facilities and reduce the number of vehicles coming to the site every day.
