Attracting the Best Talent
The enhanced careers section on Johnson Matthey’s website.
Attracting the best people to join the business is critical to our success and anyone who wants to play a part in delivering technologies that are helping to create a more sustainable world will feel right at home in Johnson Matthey.
Online media is a crucial part of recruitment today and graduates have high expectations of web design. Our website is visited by several thousand people every day, including over 3,000 who specifically visit the careers section. In 2008, following feedback we had received, we realised that we needed to make our careers section more striking and user friendly if we wanted to generate greater interest among high quality prospective candidates.
We did extensive research on what potential applicants are looking for in graduate and post-experience recruitment websites. We also investigated current trends in data format and layout. The material on the www.matthey.com careers pages was then reviewed and rewritten, with greater use of hyperlinks and images to improve ease of use and navigation through the data.
We worked with the charity organisation icould, who produce short films detailing real life career stories to spark the interest of school leavers and students in possible future careers. Six of our employees featured in the icould films, which were also uploaded to the new careers pages of the company’s website.
We have also been making improvements to the way we manage job applications. Our new in house application management system, launched in autumn 2008, stores applications received via the website for up to 12 months, providing a valuable resource. The UK HR teams can search the growing candidate database to select suitable candidates when other vacancies arise and email their CV to the recruiting manager.
With the careers section of matthey.com redeveloped, internal systems restructured and further enhancements planned, our improved recruitment systems will help to ensure we are well placed to attract the best people.
