Johnson Matthey’s employees are respected as the group’s most valuable resource and play a vital role in building a sustainable business. Their skills, qualities and wellbeing underpin the company’s success. We recognise that our people and culture are a particular strength and although the culture of an organisation is not easy to define, there is a distinctive culture in Johnson Matthey, irrespective of division, business, function or geographic location. As our business continues to grow we are working hard to tackle the challenge of integrating the Johnson Matthey culture across our expanding global operations.
Recruitment, Training, Development and Diversity
We have effective recruitment procedures to support the regular infusion of high calibre employees. Increasingly, we are recruiting graduates and qualified employees from beyond our traditional bases in Europe and North America as we continue to develop a more internationally diverse workforce to support our global business. As a result of a high level of recruitment activity in the last year, the average number of employees increased by 9.5%, with the most significant growth in the Asia region where the average number of employee increased by over 20%.
We offer training and development programmes at career foundation and management levels which seek to offer a broad understanding of the group’s businesses, give a strong base in the company’s culture and ethics and provide direct contact and networking opportunities with peers and senior managers across international boundaries. Our aim has been to integrate sustainability themes in all of our major programmes, and this has now been achieved. We have developed sustainability training materials which can be used locally in induction and awareness sessions. We have also introduced a sustainability awareness seminar to support and engage employees in our sustainability strategy, improve their understanding of our sustainability goals and enable them to plan their contribution towards achieving local and corporate sustainability objectives. We have trialled an online sustainability awareness module which will soon be available to employees. These activities supplement the sustainability site and functional reviews across all regions in which training materials are shared with local management teams.
Talent reviews and succession planning are instrumental throughout our businesses and we continue to use our management skills inventory (MSI) database as a key tool to support the international recognition and development of management talent within the group.
