There are 1.4 million people
in the UK who have been diagnosed with diabetes, a number which is
set to double by
2010. It is thought
that a further one million people suffering from the condition without
having been diagnosed. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness
in the country and can result in serious complications like heart
disease, kidney failure and stroke. Out of every £10 of NHS
expenditure, nearly £1 goes on treating diabetes and its complications.
Diabetes UK aims to ensure the highest quality of care for diabetes
sufferers and information for all. It hopes to put an end to discrimination
and ignorance and ensure a universal understanding of the condition.
Its ultimate goal is to achieve a world without diabetes.
Johnson Matthey is delighted to be able to support Diabetes UK.
It is hoped that over the year the company can contribute significantly
to raising awareness of diabetes and make an important contribution
to Diabetes UK.
