Johnson Matthey Board Changes

The Board of Johnson Matthey announces that David Davies, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Company, has retired from the Board.

David Davies, said: "After eight years as Chairman, including four as Chief Executive, I have decided to retire from Johnson Matthey and concentrate on other business and public affairs activities. Johnson Matthey is in good shape and I leave it in the capable hands of Michael Miles, Chris Clark and their colleagues."

Michael Miles, a non-executive Director, will replace Mr Davies as Chairman. Chris Clark, Chief Operating Officer of Johnson Matthey, has been appointed Chief Executive of the Company.

Johnson Matthey reports its preliminary results on Thursday, 11th June.

Notes to Editors

Michael Miles has been on the Board of Johnson Matthey since 1990. He is currently a director of ING Baring Holdings Limited and John Swire and Sons Limited. He is also a non-executive director of BP plc and BICC plc. Mr Miles was previously Chairman of Cathay Pacific Airways and Swire Group Hong Kong.

Chris Clark joined Johnson Matthey in 1962 and has wide experience of the Company's activities. After a number of management roles in the UK and abroad, he took responsibility for the group's Platinum Marketing operations in 1987. Two years later he took on additional responsibility for the Colour and Print Division. He was appointed to the Board in 1990 and in 1991 took over the Materials Technology Division, relinquishing his previous positions. He became Group Managing Director, Electronic Materials in 1995 before his appointment as Chief Operating Officer of the group in July 1996. He was also Chairman of Cookson Matthey Ceramics plc, Johnson Matthey's former joint venture with the Cookson Group.
