We run graduate programmes in India to give new employees opportunities to develop their skills and we offer internships to help us attract new talent
Johnson Matthey is proud of its excellent track record of developing and retaining good people. This is down to successful practices in recruitment, development, and the availability of career opportunities. We provide a working environment where people can grow personally and professionally, and enjoy long term successful careers with us. As the business expands, we are committed to attracting and retaining the most talented people into our businesses globally.
To build a long term sustainable workforce our Indian businesses have implemented a new graduate programme. We are now recruiting talented graduates into our businesses in India every year, and providing them with excellent development opportunities as a foundation to their career with Johnson Matthey.
Our aim is to attract students from the best universities and management institutes in India, in particular those with an interest in engineering and manufacturing. We regularly meet with career advisers at these universities, present to students, discuss career opportunities with them and conduct interviews on campus.
Graduate induction programme
We have an attractive employment offering in India with multiple sites at Taloja in Navi Mumbai, Manesar and Panki. Graduates take part in a comprehensive induction programme and are given the opportunity to rotate between the sites, gaining experience of different divisions within the company.
The induction programme includes a business overview and meetings with senior staff. Each graduate is assigned a 'buddy' to help them integrate into the company. Our HR team stay close to the new graduates to support them and their line managers in the transition from university to working life.
Attracting the most talented graduates and investing in their career development gives our business in India a competitive edge
We want to lay the foundation for our graduates to take on management roles in the medium term. The India leadership development programme develops leadership as well as business competencies. During three modules held at different locations, graduates learn about Johnson Matthey's business and receive formal training in key skills. Project work and exposure to senior Johnson Matthey leaders form part of the programme. At this stage the graduates are also matched with a mentor – a senior member of the company – to assist their career development.
Complementing the graduate programme is our shorter intern programme which also launched in 2013. Undergraduates join the company for two months when they are set to work on stimulating and challenging projects. Many also attend our pre-placement talks on campus, learn about the company and retain a positive image of Johnson Matthey as they make their career choices.
Attracting the most talented graduates and investing in their career development gives our business in India a competitive edge as we continue to grow in this region. The success of this initiative is something we intend to duplicate across the group.
