Electrophysiology and cardiac rhythm management

About 1% of the global population suffers from arrhythmia, which is rising due to a growing geriatric population. Johnson Matthey enhances the lives of arrhythmia patients by partnering with both medical device and contract manufacturers worldwide. Our CRM and EP product categories offer a wide range of solutions utilising our material science and manufacturability expertise to ensure quality and sustainability in all our processes. Our extensive product portfolio includes components and subassemblies used in devices such as:

Pacemakers and defibrillators

Platinum’s durability, inertness, and electrical conductivity makes it an ideal electrode material for devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators. The early generation devices have leads with either active fixation electrodes or passive fixation electrodes. The electrodes deliver electrical impulses to the heart muscle—in the case of a pacemaker, these ensure that the heart beats regularly and at an appropriate pace, while in the case of a defibrillator, a much stronger electrical shock is delivered as soon as the device detects a dangerously irregular heartbeat. Each lead typically has one titanium nitride coated platinum-iridium electrode, two or more ring electrodes, and platinum feed through connectors, used to connect the pulse generator to the lead. The latest generation of implantable generators have precision machined parts made up of precious metals that assist with the device’s functions.

Electrophysiology diagnostic and ablation catheters

EP catheters have an electrode on the end of the catheter that is threaded through an artery into the heart to record electrical activity while emitting electrical impulses to test the heart’s response. JM provides a variety of precious metal components for EP catheters.

We partner with the leaders in EP from the early concept and design phases to develop precision micromachined irrigation tip electrodes, ring electrodes, marker bands and other precious metal components. In addition to the metal component, our coatings and surface solutions applied to our components enhance the performance of the catheters used in these procedures. We also have metal management solutions for our customers to maintain supply chain continuity for their immediate needs.

Vascular intervention and structural heart

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a global public health and socioeconomic problem affecting millions of patients each year. The disease is characterised by the buildup of atherosclerotic plaque in the lower extremity, carotid, and renal arteries, which disturbs normal blood flow.

Johnson Matthey’s precious metal components and nitinol products play a crucial role in minimally invasive endovascular surgical techniques. We collaborate with our customers on the development of their minimally invasive product and procedure designs, which result in a paradigm shift away from invasive surgical procedures with long post-operative hospitalisation. Our precious metal wire and radiopaque markers are widely used in interventional neurology devices such as embolisation coils, guide wires and guide wire tips, vascular implants and mapping catheters.

Johnson Matthey is one of few manufacturers who can provide the thinnest nitinol sheets used in structural heart applications such as prosthetic heart valves. Also, our premium inner diameter nitinol tubes provide excellent mechanical control and precise delivery. Through our manufacturing expertise, Johnson Matthey has minimised costs by increasing yields. Our premium nitinol products are preferred by some of the major medical device and contract manufacturers for developing vascular implants and surgical devices.

In addition to manufacturing capabilities, our team of metallurgists work with our customers at every phase of the product development process to provide technical support and recommendations on the suitability and manufacturability of different alloy recipes and design tolerances.

Neurostimulation

The next generation neurostimulation devices rely upon complex engineering of micromachined miniature components and precious metal sub-assemblies with tight tolerances. We leverage our centuries of material science expertise, along with our micromachining skills to provide our customers with high quality electrodes, markers, tip coils and other components used in neurostimulators. The manufacturers of innovative devices rely on Johnson Matthey as a partner who can offer high quality comprehensive solutions to assist you in delivering competitive technologies that are first to market.

Cochlear

The new generation cochlear implants can restore hearing to people with moderate to profound hearing loss, even to infants who are born with impaired hearing. We collaborate with key manufacturers of cochlear implants and deliver high grade platinum components and platinum wire to produce more than 30,000 new generation cochlear implants every year, which in-turn enable thousands of recipients to hear for the very first time in their lives.

Other applications

Additionally, outside of our key therapy areas, our product portfolio includes precious metal and nitinol components used in orthopedic implants and surgical devices, orthodontics and surgical instrumentation. We offer the security of supply to source, manage, fabricate and recycle your precious metal materials, from small, concept development to full scale production.
