Chloride guards

Chlorine in refinery streams can have a significant effect on the integrity of refinery equipment, causing corrosion and fouling. Performance is important when it comes to chloride removal products as certain materials will result in the formation of harmful actors such as organic chlorides or green oils which can result in premature and very expensive outages of equipment and refinery processes.

Johnson Matthey’s PURASPECTM CLEARTM chloride guard product line contains a selection of products for both organic and inorganic chlorides in liquid and gas service. JM’s chloride guards are proven in difficult applications, are robust to hydrocarbon fouling and liquid entrainment, and are formulated to provide high capacities and long life. Johnson Matthey can provide tailored solutions and offers technology packages to enhance the performance of chloride guards in a variety of refinery duties.

  • ARMORTM2 is a proprietary chemical absorbent which contains an optimised level of alkali promoter

Product uses

  • Removal of trace levels of hydrogen chloride by chemical reaction from refinery gas & liquid streams

Product benefits

  • Reliable removal of HCl to levels below 0.1 ppmv (gas) and 0.1 ppmw (liquid)
  • Irreversible removal of HCl through chemical reaction with reactive phases in the absorbent.
  • Enhanced chloride capacity due to the incorporation of an optimised level of alkaline promoter
  • Cost effective removal due to a high chloride capacity and resultant long operating life
  • Disposition towards chemical reactivity and low inherent acidity mitigates by-product formation as compared to alumina-based adsorbent.

  • PERFORM™ 1 is a proprietary bi-metallic chemical absorbent containing very high levels of reactive components

Product uses

  • Removal of trace levels of chlorides by chemical reaction from refinery streams at temperatures ranging from ambient to 220°C (450°F)

Product benefits

  • Reliable removal of HCl to levels well below 0.1 ppmv (gas) or 0.1 ppmw (liquid)
  • Bulk removal of organic chloride species (can be removed to <0.1 ppmv/ppmw if used with PURASIEVE™ line)
  • Irreversible removal of HCl and RCl through chemical reaction with reactive phases in the absorbent
  • Excellent chloride capacity due to the bi-metallic formulation, which further enhances the level of chemically reactive phases in the formulation
  • Cost effective chloride removal due to the high capacity, minimising change out frequency
  • Minimised tendency for by-product formation due to a low alumina content and resultant low alumina surface area
  • Operable over a wide temperature range to cover most chloride removal applications.

  • Removal of low levels of RCl in a wide variety of refinery streams at temperatures from ambient upwards

Product benefits

  • Polishing of organic chloride content down to <0.1 ppmv (gas) or <0.1 ppmw (liquid)
  • For use as customised solution with other PURASPECTM products
  • Optimum size and high surface area to remove the maximum organic chloride content
  • High particle strength to prevent degradation in operation
  • Operable over a wide temperature range to cover most organochloride removal applications
  • Capable of replacing inert support layers in vessels.
