Developing the future of
platinum group metals

We're partnering with leading platinum group metal (PGM) companies in a transformative programme, aiming to accelerate the development of new applications and harness the power of these metals

SCROLL TO LEARN MORE

Our modern economy depends on innovation in these vital metals to address global challenges and support economic growth. This collaboration will seize the opportunity to expand the breadth of technologies that can benefit from the unmatched performance of PGMs and their robust, circular supply chains.

Hear from our CTO Elizabeth Rowsell and team on the context behind this groundbreaking collaboration

Together, we will explore uses across multiple sectors including:

Clean energy
Enhanced emissions detection and reduction in stationary and mobile sources
New electronic materials
High performance alloys and other advanced materials

This will develop a stable future pipeline of these metals for critical applications in clean energy, transportation, healthcare and the digital transition. The world is now - more than ever - dependent on cutting-edge PGM solutions that are both secure and sustainable. The applications are diverse, and the possibilities are endless.

Our everyday
dependence on PGMs

PGMs are the hidden superheroes powering technology all around us; from the phones in your pocket, our ever-growing thirst for data, and day-to-day transportation, to life-changing medicines, medical devices such as pacemakers, and the clean air that we breathe.

Their unique properties mean they cannot be replaced in many high-performance applications.

LEARN MORE ABOUT PGMs

The PGM opportunity

Although these metals are geologically rare and mined in small quantities, they're far more accessible than you may think.

After decades of industrial use especially in catalytic converters, PGMs are already circulating in the global economy in substantial quantities. This has created well established supply chains and recycling networks, alongside the highly regulated mining environments that exist in Southern Africa.

As demand for internal combustion vehicles declines, the availability of platinum, palladium, and rhodium will increase, creating space for new applications. And that means we can innovate.

In a world dependant on critical materials, PGMs are well positioned for the future, compared to many other metals that face a much more challenging supply profile.

Leading innovation

At Johnson Matthey, we've done this before. We've been using our leading R&D expertise for over two centuries; from pioneering the world's first commercial auto catalyst, to making the first moon landing possible with our fuel cells, inventing cisplatin - the world's first anti-cancer therapy, and enabling the first transatlantic flight powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) derived from plants.

And now, with our partners, we can do it again. With world-class scientists, a dedicated technical centre of excellence, and a rich history of working with these precious metals, we will work as a collective to create world-changing PGM-based technologies of the future.
