What is sustainable aviation fuel?
Sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, is a collective term for a drop-in fuel made from renewable feedstocks that can be used in existing aircraft and fuelling infrastructure to decarbonise aviation.
They can decarbonise the aviation sector as they are expected to play a key role in reducing the aviation industry’s carbon emissions.
In fact, it's said that SAF will contribute up to 65% of CO2 reduction, equivalent to 449 billion litres per year of SAF supply by 2050.

How Johnson Matthey is helping to enable SAF
We've worked with our partners and independently to develop a suite of patented and proprietary technologies and catalysts targeting large sustainable pathways.
HyCOgenTM
HyCOgen is Johnson Matthey’s Reverse Water Gas Shift (RWGS) technology. It is a catalysed process to convert electrolytic (green) hydrogen and carbon dioxide into syngas.
FT CANSTM
FT CANS is a scalable technology jointly developed with bp for efficient conversion of syngas from waste and biomass into a sustainable synthetic crude.
BioForming® S2A technology
BioForming S2A process technology, developed in collaboration with Virent, converts biomass sugars into renewable fuels, primarily Synthesized Aromatic Kerosene (SAK) that enables 100% drop-in SAF with lower particulate matter emissions than conventional jet fuel (or Jet A fuel, more specifically).
