Soft-solders
Soft solders
Silver-tin alloys offer a number of advantages over tin-lead solders. They have excellent soldering characteristics of alloy flow, aesthetic appearance and wetting. They demonstrate improved strength characteristics over conventional tin-lead alloys, particularly where service at moderately elevated temperatures is a factor. Being lead-free they may be used in plumbing installations and food-handling equipment.
COMSOL™ has excellent creep resistance when compared to tin-lead solders at room and elevated temperature.
Lead-free
P40™
Sn | Ag | ISO 9453 | Melting Range |
96 | 4 | Alloy No. 701 | 221oC |
Johnson Matthey's P40 is a 4% silver-tin soft soldering alloy. P40 has excellent soldering characteristics and offers a number of advantages over conventional tin-lead alloys. It provides improved strength characteristics particularly where service at moderately elevated temperatures is a factor.
Being lead free, P40 may be used in plumbing installations, particularly where soft water is in use. P40 is widely used in food handling equipment where lead contamination must be avoided.
P40 is a good colour match on stainless steel and the resulting joints are not prone to interfacial (crevice) corrosion. The optimum joint gap for P40 is 0.075mm.
PLUMBSOL™
Sn | Ag | Melting Range |
97.5 | 2.5 | 221 - 225oC |
Johnson Matthey PLUMBSOL is a 2.5% silver-tin soft soldering filler metal. Like P40 this alloy is lead free. PLUMBSOL has excellent soldering characteristics and offers a number of advantages over conventional tin-lead alloys. It provides improved strength characteristics particularly where service at moderately elevated temperatures is a factor.
PLUMBSOL is a good colour match on stainless steel and the resulting joints are not prone to interfacial (crevice) corrosion.
The optimum joint gap for PLUMBSOL is 0.075mm.
P5™
Sn | Ag | ISO 9453 | Melting Range |
95 | 5 | Alloy No. 704 | 221 - 235oC |
Johnson Matthey P5 is a 5% silver-tin soft soldering filler metal. Like P40 this alloy is lead free. P5 has excellent soldering characteristics and offers a number of advantages over conventional tin-lead alloys. It provides improved strength characteristics particularly where service at moderately elevated temperatures is a factor.
P5 is a good colour match on stainless steel and the resulting joints are not prone to interfacial (crevice) corrosion.
The optimum joint gap for P5 is 0.075mm.
97C
Sn | Cu | ISO 9453 | Melting Range |
97 | 3 | Alloy No. 402 | 230 - 250oC |
Johnson Matthey's 97C has a longer melting range than 99C™ and consequently builds up greater fillets and is a better gap filler. It is now being used extensively on automotive radiators.
99C
Sn | Cu | ISO 9453 | Melting Range |
99 | 1 | Alloy No. 401 | 230 - 240oC |
Johnson Matthey's 99C is a lead free solder which has a short melting range and good flow characteristics. It has been adopted as the universal plumbers solder.
LM10A™
Sn | Ag | Cu | Melting Range |
87 | 10 | 3 | 214 - 275oC |
95A
Sn | Sb | ISO 9453 | Melting Range |
95 | 5 | Alloy No. 201 | 230 - 240oC |
This is a tin-antimony soft soldering alloy with good flow characteristics.
Silver-(Tin)-Lead
JM6236
Ag | Sn | Pb | ISO 9453 | Melting Range |
2 | 62 | 36 | Alloy No. 171 | 178 - 190oC |
This product is a silver-tin-lead soft soldering alloy. It demonstrates good flow characteristics when molten.
COMSOL™
Ag | Sn | Pb | ISO 9453 | Melting Range |
1.5 | 5 | 93.5 | Alloy No. 191 | 296oC |
Johnson Matthey Comsol is a high melting point (296°C) silver-tin-lead soft solder. It can be supplied as a solid wire, as a flux cored wire with rosin, synthetic resin or acid type fluxes and as a specially formulated solder paste.
A25™
Ag | Pb | ISO 9453 | Melting Range |
2.5 | 97.5 | Alloy No. 181 | 304oC |
Johnson Matthey A25 is a 2.5% silver-lead soldering filler metal. It offers increased strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures over conventional tin-lead solders. The silver addition improves wetting of A25 onto copper and copper-based alloys and to a lesser extent on steels. Flow of the alloy is not as good as tin lead alloys. The optimum joint gap for A25 is 0.2mm.
A5™
Ag | Pb | ISO 9453 | Melting Range |
5 | 95 | Alloy No. 182 | 304 - 370oC |
Johnson Matthey A5 is a 5% silver-lead soldering filler metal. It offers increased strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures over conventional tin-lead solders. The silver addition improves wetting of A5 onto copper and copper-based alloys and to a lesser extent on steels.
Flow of the alloy is not as good as tin lead alloys and the alloy has a long melting range. The optimum joint gap for A5 is 0.2mm.
