Product formulation requires a multi-disciplinary approach with access to experts in chemistry, modelling, manufacturing, processing and engineering. Bringing these together allows us to deliver our synthetic science innovations in a stable and useable form for our customers.

What is product formulation?

Product formulation is the understanding of how materials behave and interact to provide enhanced properties, improved processing and delivery of an active ingredient in a convenient and useable form. If a formulation is not well understood, changes in the local environment or raw materials can have a drastic effect on the quality and performance of the product or its long term stability.

Optimising performance

We consider many facets in parallel when formulating a product. Ingredients in a formulation work together and changing one can have a knock-on effect on others. In our laboratories, we bring together know-how to develop a formulation that delivers improved and efficient use of the active components, getting the most out of the clever synthetic science that goes into our products. This could include ensuring optimised dispersion of the active ingredient across the product with our rheology expertise (i.e. understanding how a material flows) or improving access to the active component through particle engineering.

Safer, more stable and longer lasting

Crucially, our products must be in a form that is suitable for our customers’ applications, with stability and shelf life the best they can be. Our forming expertise includes extrusion, tabletting, granulation and spray drying, and applies to all our catalyst products. The environmental safety of our products is very important to us, so we work to ensure formulations avoid harmful ingredients, making our customers’ processing safer, and reducing risk.
