UK Process Engineering Development Programme (PEDP)

Overview

At Johnson Matthey Catalyst Technologies we provide world class solutions for the, petrochemical, syngas, oil refining and gas processing industries. As a global leading technology and catalyst provider, we use science, chemistry, and chemical engineering to research, develop and innovate solutions for the sustainable technologies of the future in fuels and chemicals and in decarbonising the way chemicals are produced.

Our catalyst and technologies are used in the production of many everyday products from construction materials and engineering polymers to cosmetics and personal care products, to fuels, foods, fertilisers, and pharmaceuticals.

We design and license flowsheets that enable more efficient processes and unlock new solutions for the net zero transition. Our unique combination of process technology solutions and high-performance catalysts maximises value to our customers and supports long-term win-win relationships.

Our high calibre, professional, chemical engineering talent maintain an effective balance of technical, managerial, and commercial skills.  As technology licensor our expertise is in technology scale-up and commercialisation. Our work comprises R&D conceptual process design, basic engineering, supply of critical equipment and catalysts, client training, construction reviews, pre-commissioning, commissioning, performance testing and plant operational support.

Chemical engineering graduates joining our process department are enrolled onto our highly successful IChemE registered Accredited Company Training Scheme (ACTS).  Many of our chemical engineers are chartered and many of our senior engineers, principal engineers and managers joined as graduates or as young engineers and enjoy a challenging and rewarding career with JM.

Join us and help us achieve our goal to be the undisputed leader in sustainable solutions.

UK Graduate Programme - Catalyst Technologies

Location: Teesside, London

We invite Graduate Chemical Engineers to join our Process Department at either Teesside or London and be enrolled onto the IChemE Accredited Company Training Scheme (ACTS) called the Process Engineering Development Programme (PEDP).

The PEDP is an experience-based resource driven programme where we look to provide breadth and depth of experience within our business based upon our resource needs which are identified by department heads, technology managers and lead engineers. This real on the job experience means that your input is valued from day one and provides training and development that will enable chemical engineers to build on their high academic achievements at university and gain the experience and skills of chemical engineering professionals, leading to chartered status.

IChemE says that becoming CEng MIChemE is a professional qualification that sets the gold standard in chemical, biochemical, process and related areas of engineering across industry and academia. A graduate completing our ACTS would be exempt from Stage 2 (Initial Professional Development) of the IChemE three-stage chartership process.

The graduate is expected to be on the PEDP for 4 years during which we encourage the engineer to:

  • take on personal responsibility.

  • realise their full potential.

  • embed continuous professional development and personal growth as an accepted feature of working life.

We promote learning through the concept of 70:20:10, which states that a blend of different learning approaches provides powerful learning, and that development will be:

  • about 70% from on-the-job experiences and tasks.

  • about 20% from feedback, coaching and mentoring.

  • about 10% from formal learning, structured courses and reading.

The chemical engineer can expect to work in a range of different roles within the business and will be moved between Teesside and London to develop skills, experience, competencies and understanding of the business.

Key responsibilities:

  • Research & Development (R&D): supporting design and operation of test rigs for process technology and catalysts development. Supporting manufacturing excellence and new manufacturing technology development across JM.

  • Development: working on catalyst application development, new catalyst characterisation, new or existing technologies flow sheet development.

  • Design: work on technical proposals for our licensed technologies and contribute to basic engineering packages for world scale plants, support revamp projects for licensed technologies and for customers utilising JM catalyst.

  • Customer support: working on catalyst and reactor designs for new plants utilising JM catalysts. Analysing plant data, preparing catalyst technical quotations and on-site support.

  • Operations: plant construction review, commissioning, and operational support for our clients’ plants.
