Our leadership commitment to your mental wellbeing
At Johnson Matthey, we recognise the importance of health and wellbeing in enabling our people to be at their best, and mental health is a core part of this. Championed from the top down, we are committed to fostering a culture of openness and providing the resources needed for everyone to thrive at work and at home.
Board oversight: Our Societal Value Committee has direct oversight of our mental health and wellbeing strategy, ensuring it remains a key business priority aligned with our EHS objectives.
Day-to-day management: Our global Wellbeing Ambassadors network, with dedicated representatives from each region, is responsible for implementing our Global Wellbeing Standard and managing our wellbeing initiatives, ensuring they meet local needs.
Our formal commitment: Our foundational commitment is formalised in our Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Policy, signed by our CEO, which explicitly states our objective to "promote good mental wellbeing for all, both inside and outside of work." This commitment applies to all employees and contingent workers across all JM locations worldwide.
Our implementation framework: The ‘how’ is detailed in our internal Global Wellbeing Standard, which outlines our comprehensive approach, roles, responsibilities, and procedures for supporting mental health. We also have an internal occupational health procedure, Management of Psychological Health & Safety.
It's okay to talk: building an open culture
We are actively working to eliminate the stigma around mental health. We encourage open conversations between colleagues, line managers, and our network of dedicated supporters. Our goal is to create an environment where everyone feels safe to speak up and ask for support without judgement.
Join the conversation: in partnership with our Employee Resource Groups, we facilitate regular safe-space conversations and run awareness campaigns - such as our Mental Health Awareness Week storytelling initiative - to encourage the sharing of experiences and promote understanding. For example, during Mental Health Awareness Week 2025, 245 colleagues participated in the Discovering the World of Emotional Intelligence online webinar.

Supporting your whole self
Our holistic strategy, as defined in our global wellbeing standard, is built on four key pillars to support every aspect of your life.
Mental and emotional health
-
Employee Assistance Programme (EAP): Confidential, 24/7 counselling and support for you and your family.
-
Wellbeing ambassadors: We have a growing network of wellbeing ambassadors across our global sites. Ambassadors act as a point of contact for confidential conversations and can guide colleagues to professional support. To support them in this role, ambassadors are regularly invited to mental wellbeing training and webinars delivered throughout the year, which build awareness, listening skills, and understanding of how to signpost appropriate support.
-
Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are voluntary, employee-led communities that foster a diverse and inclusive workplace. They provide support, build community, and
help every employee maximise their potential. For details, click here to view.
-
'Elements' wellbeing platform: Access curated resources, apps, articles, and on-demand workshops focused on stress management, resilience, and mindfulness.
Financial wellbeing
We know that financial stress can weigh heavily on the mind. That’s why supporting your financial wellbeing is a key part of our commitment to your mental health. We provide a foundation of fair, competitive pay and empower you with tools for the future through financial education and our employee Assist program resources. Our annual Financial Wellbeing campaign is specifically designed to reduce financial anxiety, giving you the peace of mind to focus on what matters most. Our goal is to help you and your family feel secure, make confident choices, and fully enjoy life—both now and in the future. Some of the benefits we offer to help you feel financially secure and mentally focused include:
- Retirement savings
- Share plans
- Saving accounts
- House saving funds
- Life and disability insurance
- Commuter allowances and loans
Starting or supporting a growing family is one of life's most meaningful journeys, but it can also be a source of significant stress. To support your mental health and family's wellbeing during this critical time, we provide a Global Parental Leave Standard. This ensures every new primary caregiver—including adoptive parents—receives a foundational 16 weeks of fully paid leave. Our goal is to give you the priceless peace of mind to fully embrace this new chapter, focusing on your family's needs without the added anxiety of lost income.
Physical health
We support this through benefits such as:
-
Medical plans
-
Health assessments
-
Fitness discounts
-
Global step challenges
Social and community connection
Your social wellbeing is critical to your mental health. To help you build a strong support network and a sense of purpose, we provide opportunities for connection, growth, and community. We believe that when you feel connected and valued, you are better equipped to handle life's challenges and achieve fulfillment.
This includes benefits like:
- Holiday
- Smart working
- Tuition reimbursement
- Paid leave for community service and volunteering
- Retailer discounts
At JM, we know the vital role that recognition plays in improving moral, employee engagement and overall feelings of belonging. Through our Say Thanks programme, colleagues are encouraged to celebrate and recognise each other and the contributions they make. Recognition also triggers the brain to release "happiness chemicals" like dopamine and serotonin, which improve mood, motivation, and stress regulation, ultimately benefiting mental health.
Supporting you throughout your career
Our global wellbeing standard ensures support and reasonable adjustments are available at every stage of your JM journey.
Starting out: During onboarding, you’ll be introduced to our wellbeing resources and our commitment to mental health.
Day-to-day support: Our internal EHS procedures, alongside the support from our Wellbeing Ambassadors and EGRs, allow you to confidentially discuss and agree on any adjustments you need with your manager.
Returning to work: We offer supportive, phased return-to-work plans for anyone who has been absent due to health reasons. This is multi-functional by working closely with our employees, our people services team, occupational health and other partners as and when required.
For managers: We equip our people managers with the skills to create and maintain positive workplace cultures that supports positive mental health and wellbeing, and ensure leaders are prepared to recognise signs of struggle, engage in supportive conversations, and confidently guide their team members toward available resources. This foundational training is complemented by an ongoing manager's toolkit, providing continuous guidance to help them support their teams effectively.
Our progress and impact
We are committed to transparency and continuous improvement. We measure our impact against the objectives in our global wellbeing standard through:
Annual employee engagement survey: We use real-time feedback on psychological safety, workload, and stress to continuously reshape our wellbeing programs throughout the year, ensuring they respond to our people’s evolving needs. Despite a year of significant organisational change, reported workplace stress among our employees remains lower than the external market benchmark (50% vs. 51.7%).
For instance, we are integrating wellbeing into core leadership programs, focusing on building skills in psychological safety and proactive support. We are also coaching our business partners on how to interpret engagement data and activate effective wellbeing strategies within their teams.
Key performance indicators (KPIs): We regularly report on engagement with our wellbeing initiatives, including EAP utilisation. In 2025, overall EAP uptake increased by 0.28%, alongside a 0.16% increase in wellbeing coaching participation. Our wellbeing ambassador network has also continued to grow, now comprising over 50 ambassadors across all JM sites.

Your voice shapes our strategy
Our wellbeing programmes are co-created with our employees. You can get involved through:

Local wellbeing ambassadors: employee-led groups that help tailor our global standard to local cultures and needs.
-
Feedback channels: employee surveys (every 6 months) and focus groups to gather your input on what support you need most.
-
