Sponge Metal Catalysts
Johnson Matthey’s SPONGE METAL™ catalysts are an affordable, effective and reliable solution for slurry phase hydrogenation processes. The catalysts are prepared from nickel-aluminium alloys, from which the aluminium has been leached, leaving a highly porous nickel framework. The active metal surface is saturated with absorbed hydrogen and stored in water, ready to ship use without any pre-activation required.
Whilst predominantly nickel based, we offer a range of 30+ different catalysts with varied:
Alloy compositions
Surface treated promoter metals

Applications of SPONGE METAL catalysts
Our SPONGE METAL catalysts are most commonly used in hydrogenation reactions for the manufacturing of polyols such as sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol, xylitol and lactitol. However, they also perform a key role in other industries such as polymer intermediates, solvents, pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. We additionally have a line of SPONGE METAL catalysts available coated in either primary or tertiary amines, for amine reduction chemistry.
