Getters absorbents

PROTELECTMgetter materials are used to ensure a hermetic (sealed) environment is available within electronics packages such as source lasers, gyroscopes, microwaves and medical packaging, to prevent premature device failure.

The use of scavengers to prevent the build-up of H2O, hydrogen and other unwanted species that are inherently trapped within the metallised layers of the package or from components within the package, are becoming increasingly more common place. If these unwanted species were allowed to reside inside the package, the hermetic atmosphere of the device would be at risk.

PROTELEC getters can be used in a number of applications across a variety of markets including, medical, military, aerospace, oil and gas, high reliability telecoms and in consumer markets.

Johnson Matthey's range of PROTELEC getters is used throughout the electronics industry to ensure a hermetic environment is maintained within electronics packages such as source lasers, gyroscopes, microwaves and medical packaging, to prevent premature device failure.

With the need for electronics packaging to get smaller and smaller, the use of high reliability scavengers to prevent the build-up of unwanted species is becoming more commonplace. Such contaminants include moisture, hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and organic compounds, outgas from the metalised layers within the package or from components within the packaging. If these unwanted species were allowed to reside inside the package, the hermetic atmosphere of the device would be at risk.

The use of a getter within a hermetic device is a well-known solution to capture any adventitiously absorbed species that outgas during use. The more novel applications of such getters not only remove moisture but also CO2, H2 and small organics that may be present due to epoxide or solvent degradation.

PROTOELEC series

The PROTELEC HTA-series of high performance getter tablets provide a sorption solution for unwanted contaminants in hermetically sealed devices.

They provide high performance moisture adsorption and can be tailored towards other contaminant species including H2, CO2 and NMP. The PROTELEC getter formulation incorporates the required amount of zeolite with other additives to provide bespoke solutions for customers' needs.

PROTELEC getter tablets are stable at a range of temperatures from 0°C to 450°C (32-752°F) and some as high as 800°C (1472°F) depending on the application. This makes them the material of choice for many high reliability applications. Due to the inorganic nature of the tablets, there is no outgassing risk within the package and the PROTELEC tablets can aid in adsorbing any other unwanted outgassing materials from epoxy resins, glues and plating commonly found within the electronics packages.

Johnson Matthey's PROTELEC getters have outstanding lifespan and can work for up to 25 years within the 980 laser pump diode butterfly packages.

The PROTELEC HTI-series is a unique market offering, combining the excellent adsorption and adhesion characteristics of the HGI-series with the ability to withstand temperatures in excess of 326°C (619°F). PROTELEC HTI-series inks are suitable for devices which do not have the required internal volume to accommodate a tablet getter but still need the thermal stability of a tablet.

Supplied as a cured deposit on a suitable substrate (typically a package lid) Johnson Matthey’s PROTELEC HTI inks are activated prior to use to ensure that 100% of the capacity is available.

Activation temperatures are typically 120°C (248°F) for six hours. Frequently the standard pre-lid seal bake will be suitable as an activation step for the getter. Johnson Matthey’s PROTELEC inks are stable up to temperatures of 326°C (619°F) for 30 minutes which is suitable as the lid seal temperature for combo lids and similar applications.

The PROTELEC HGI-series offers outstanding performance. Our family of high capacity ink getters offer many of the performance advantages of the tablet getters at a fraction of the cost. PROTELEC inks are suitable for devices which do not have the required internal volume to accommodate a tablet getter and housing.

Supplied as a cured deposit on a suitable substrate (typically a package lid) these PROTELEC inks are activated prior to use to ensure that 100% of the capacity is available. Activation temperatures are low (typically 90°C-110°C / 194°F-230°F) for a short time (typically four-six hours). These parameters are flexible. Frequently the standard pre-lid seal bake will be suitable as an activation step for the getter.

PROTELEC inks are stable at temperatures up to 140 °C (284°F), for higher temperature applications, tablets are more commonly used as their stability at temperatures up to 450 °C (842°F)is well documented.

The PROTELEC HTIR-series is a novel market offering that provides the excellent adsorption and adhesion characteristics of the PROTELEC HTI-series but can also displace infrared radiation within the package.
